Eye Magazine Re- imagined

Re-interpreting Eye magazine a rule based editorial system using a 12×12 grid

Eye magazine issue #106 became the starting point with this editorial exploration. In this project, the re-imagination process is based on Karl Gestner design programme methodology.

The Grid

Masthead

Rules:

  • Follow a strict 12 × 12 grid system.

  • The design must be based on the fundamental elements of design: lines, dots, basic geometric shapes, or a combination of these elements.

  • Only the masthead should be featured, with little to no supporting text. The visual shapes and forms should carry the communication and convey the concept.

  • The masthead should evolve with each season, creating a different variation while rotating across the three masthead versions over the years.

The System

Front & Back Cover

The system begins with the Spring cover, where the fundamental elements of design. The circle and the grid constructed from lines sit harmoniously and joyfully within the grid.

In Summer, the circle expands, explodes, and moves dynamically to celebrate the energy and warmth of the season.

With Autumn, the system evolves further by integrating the glyphs with the grid structure. However, when Winter enters the system, it becomes frozen by the harshness of the season. The lines begin to disrupt the grid rather than remain contained within it, unlike in Spring and Summer. The sense of evolution is interrupted, and even the mirroring concept becomes fragmented and disrupted.
